Value Our Families Teams Up with U.S. Rep. Judy Chu to Reintroduce Reuniting Families Act

Press conference features landmark legislation that outlines common-sense fixes to complex, longstanding problems in the family immigration system
Washington, D.C. - On Tuesday, Sep. 19, 2023, at 11 a.m. EDT, the Value Our Families (VOF) coalition and U.S. Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., hosts a press conference at the House Triangle to mark the reintroduction of the Reuniting Families Act, landmark legislation that puts in place common-sense reforms to the family immigration system.
The Reuniting Families Act, last introduced in 2019, is a comprehensive reform aimed at improving existing processes in a family immigration system that has seen no reforms in more than 30 years. Among other things, it will:
More than double the number of family-preference visas available
Raise existing yearly per-country visa limits, so the wait is not so long for countries with high levels of migration
Set a time limit on visa processing, so no immigrant has to wait more than 10 years for a visa if they have an approved application
Nearly 4 million people wait in family immigration backlogs, and the Reuniting Families Act could help many of them rejoin their loved ones. Some have waited decades for such a reunion. The legislation also helps ease deep labor shortages in sectors such as hospitality and professional services that help strengthen the U.S. economy.
“No one should have to wait more than 10 years to see loved ones because of a paperwork backlog,” said Alaide Vilchis Ibarra, campaign director for Value Our Families. "This is a bill whose time has come.”

La conferencia de prensa destaca legislación histórica que contienesoluciones lógicas para problemas complejos en el sistema de inmigración familiar
Washington, D.C. - El martes 19 de septiembre de 2023, a las 11 a.m. EDT, la coalición Value Our Families (VOF) y la Congresista Judy Chu presentan una conferencia de prensa en el House Triangle para celebrar la reintroducción de la Ley de Reunificación de Familias, legislación histórica que traza reformas lógicas al sistema de inmigración familiar.
La Ley de Reunificación de Familias, últimamente presentada en 2019, es una reforma integral destinada a mejorar los procesos existentes en un sistema de inmigración familiar que no ha visto reformas en más de 30 años. Entre otras cosas, hará lo siguiente:
Incrementa por más del doble las visas de preferencia familiar disponibles
Aumenta los límites de visas anuales por país, logrando que la espera no sea tan larga para personas de países con altos niveles de inmigración
Establece un límite absoluto para el procesamiento de visas, para que ningún inmigrante tenga que esperar más de 10 años si tiene una solicitud aprobada
Casi 4 millones de personas esperan en línea en el sistema de inmigración familiar. La Ley de Reunificación de Familias podría ayudarlos a reunirse con sus seres queridos. Algunos han esperado décadas. La ley también alivia la escasez de mano de obra en hospitalidad y servicios profesionales que fortalecen la economía estadounidense.
“Nadie debe esperar más de 10 años para ver a sus seres queridos por trámites retrasados”, dijo Alaide Vilchis Ibarra, directora de Value Our Families. “El momento ha llegado para este proyecto de ley”.
